It is a bit hard to predict the future, especially in a piece of fiction, and the outcome of the D&G's being found guilty was not completely spelled out, but the feeling I get would be that their fathers would have to repay any expenses due to losses of property from their burglaries and pay for property damage resulting from their casting off boats - in addition, the fathers would either be required to, or they would take it upon themselves, to "take them off the river" to get them under more direct parental supervision and away from where they could do additional illegal acts of vandalism.

There is also the hint that the fathers might lose their jobs as boatbuilders, although they do have a good reputation for the quality of their work, and the boatbuilders they worked for would actually be the losers in that eventuality.

So essentially, so far as the D&G's are concerned, they would be made "to go away" (from the river). When you consider that outcome, just about the same thing happened to G.O. & Buddy.

Although our heroes considered the possibility of jail, er, gaol,(sorry 'bout that, forgot where I was there for a moment) that was just their own worst case imagination, not any real actual threat from the adult world.

It is not clear as to just where the "away" was that the two went to, or just how far away that was, or for how long a time it was, but it is probably a good idea in any fictional series, when one defines a "heavy", not to permanently get rid of him, but allow him the option of re-appearing in future adventures. Consider Sherlock Holmes' Moriarity (SP?) and how he kept going away and then reappearing. Who knows but what in Coots in the North that the evil pair might have made another appearance. What if the "away" they went to was to that Lake District to the North? After all, the evil "Squashy Hat" came back in a later episode, in a rather altered mode of acceptance by the others. What if G.O. and Buddy came back in Coots in the North, and actually became some sort of hero after suffering from unjust suspicions resulting from their previous reputation? Bad boy turns good sort of thing. We will never know, as Ransome took those answers with him. Sigh...

Just thinking "out loud..."
