In SECRET WATER, Chapter 5:

"I say," cried Bridget suddenly. "This box has got Sinbad
on it."

It was a cardboard box, and in it was a packet of cat's
biscuits, a small bottle of Bovril and half a dozen very small
tins of salmon.

"He'll love the salmon," said Roger. "But what's the
Bovril for?"

"It's to put with the hot water you have to pour over
the biscuits," said Susan.

----------

In this chapter containing the above snippet, they are unpacking their goods trying to get their camp set up properly, taking inventory of the goodies that have been supplied. They see some GARIBALDI SQUASHED FLIES, much to Roger's delight, along with some chocolate, "the nut and raisin kind in slabs." They also seem to take great delight in finding three tins of tongue. Now there is a taste treat that I have managed to avoid so far in this life, as even just the idea of chewing on a cow's tongue does not really whet the appetite all that much.

By some calculations, Bridget is supposed to be four years old in this story. Yet apparently, she is able to READ the "SINBAD" label on the box of cat supplies. Is she old enough to have started going to school, and thus is learning to read?

The item called "BOVRIL" leaves me wondering. Is this a BRAND NAME, or is this a generic name of a kind of sauce? Never heard of such, so was wondering if this is something that is still available today. What is it?

Poor Sinbad. To be thus marooned with no cod liver oil. William, the pug dog in BIG SIX, seemed to be kept well supplied with that lovely stuff, but this cat will have to do without.
