As a youngest child with four older siblings, it would be more surprising if Bridget didn't know some words by sight, especially in the pre-TV/computer age. My own daughter aged five came home from her first day at school and promptly began to teach her younger brother(aged about 2) to read. As a result, he skimmed through the pre-school years along with his friends who had generally received the same treatment.
