I would have thought the D & G's probably did get a reward. As I have said earlier, the shackles which were recovered through their actions were worth a great deal of money, and the code of morals binding everybody but villains within the books is quite clear. Sonning would have recognised his obligations, as Rodleys did at the end of Coot Club.

However Tom and the D's would certainly have refused any reward - it just wasn't done to accept money. The D & G's wouldn't have been able to afford such niceties, but the code still wouldn't have allowed them to boast about it to the fisherman. So we'll never know how much it was.
