The Hitch-hiker trilogy ended up as five books - the last was called Mostly Harmless if I remember correctly. But of course it was a radio series before it was any books at all, and no subsequent incarnation has been as good as the radio version.

In adition to Adams and Asimov, there's also a story, possibly by Henry Kuttner, in which all the computers in the universe are linked into a huge network. A guy switches it on and asks "Is there a God?". A flash of lightning welds the switch in the "on" position, and a voice replies "Now there is a God."

Did this discussion have something to do with Ransome at one stage?
