The problem of wood floating was discussed at some length in the book on the Thor Heyerdahl expedition across the Pacific in Kon Tiki. The balsa, as it became water logged, ended up sinking. Apparently this was observed by each crew member but not discussed at the time.

If the punt was out of the water a lot then she was perhaps dry and Swallow if moored in the boat house was wet. Makes a difference to the density if you take the air out and replace it with water.

But this just a guess.
