I think that you are absolutely right there. It has long been said the education is wasted on the young. Of course with maturity comes an understanding of the personal benefits of education and perhaps a regret of opportunity wasted. Also for the young there is just so much going on and so much to learn about society and life that perhaps they just reach overload.
I am sure that it is nothing new. Certainly my father told me that as a national service soldier he spent evenings writing letters for a number of his colleagues. The young soldiers that I deal with may have their faults but they can all read! While I'm on the subject I would also like to place on record that when faced with a challenge they are as "up for it" and courageous as any who came before them.
