Didn't Tom tie the Dreadnought painter to the mudweight rope? So, when he hauled up the weight, as long as D/nought didn't weigh too much, it wouldn't take too much effort to haul that up as well. Lifting Swallow, AR specifically makes the point, if I remember correctly, that with the ballast out, Swallow hardly weighed anything. Presumably that's why John wouldn't then mind hauling her in over the rough lake bottom. In which case, there isn't the need to find reasons for differences between the boats - although it's fun reading everyone's theories anyway!
