good old good old days - when beer was better and/or pints were bigger ( doubt thirsts were more easily quenched and I certainly need more than one )

whereas a metre

is usefully the length between my nose and fingertips - either side ( gibbon arms )

you must admit that a litre of water weighing a kilogram is neat.
