I learned to box the compass (memorised the points of the old style compass rose) by studying the illustration in my copy of SA, before I was ten. I have never forgotten it, and it has served me quite well.
One point is 11.25 degrees, which is why sidelights are required to be visible 22.5 degrees abaft the beam of the vessel displaying them.
