In the UK, if a work is copyright-protected, it is an infringement of that copyright to copy it, whether it is for 'resale' or not. However, if the work is copied for private use, then obviously the owner of the copyright will not know about the copying, so you can get away with it. Any written material, including letters and emails, are protected by copyright and strictly speaking should not be copied. Of course in the case of mere copying, the copyright cannot be enforced, but the copyright can be protected by legal action if the copied material is passed onto someone else, whether for money or not.

(By the way, all Tarboard postings are protected by copyright, and may not be copied and distributed without the consent of the author of the posting. If the exact format of the board is also copied, then the consent of the Tarboard Website owner will also be needed. This can all be checked with the UK Copyright Act. These rights are enforceable.)

The position may be different in the USA.
