I suppose the appropriate follow-up would be:
How does one find out who owns the copyright of any book or illustration?

Some may be obvious, but others are tolerably obscure. A not quite long enough deceased author who died (with no offspring) of a small print run book published by a company that is now out of business? (Just to make matters difficult!)

What happens if you make every reasonable effort but can't locate the holder of copyright? Can you publish and be damned if the person comes out of the woodwork at a later date?
