My point is that there should be no necessity to even ask a gallery for permission (if it isn’t theirs to give) as they will often want to charge a usage fee when they are not actually providing anything. Many have managed to convince people that this is part of obtaining permission. If the gallery has been assigned the ©, that is a different matter and I have no objection to paying galleries for good copies of works which they hold, but not for © which is not theirs to give.
And no, she is not a barrister!
Also, “courtesy” suggests you have a choice as to whether you should ask. You don’t.
