As regards the Bartleby edition it used to be the case that copyright existed in the image provided, so that they could claim copyright for their edition only.

My understanding is that when 70 years was introduced in the UK a) authors like Kipling and Hardy went back into copyright and b) 70 years became common throughout the EU (which pleased the Germans who already had 70 years).

I've never minded (though I have often winced) at the repro charges imposed by museums and art galleries. They are, after all, making it possible for the public to have ready access to the works in question - and they may even conserve the work of art in the correct climatic conditions (so far as they are known).

As to whether Buchan's literary heirs renewed copyright, I suspect one would need to contact either his agent if known or - much simpler - the Society of Authors. Turning to another subject, on which I feel rather better informed, what did other people make of Andrew Greer's THE RETURN OF JOHN MACNAB? I loved it, but ...
