I heartily agree with Peter - I can still remember looking for the familiar picture-covered books in the old library near my hated high school. I would retreat there after school every day and console myself by reading my favorite books about kids 'out there' away from school doing the things I would much rather have been doing. I never had my own copies then so now my treasured and battered first editions, read and reread, are valuable in the memories they bring as well as in their content. I can almost imagine I got them for successive Christmasses and birthdays.
