I am another pro-GN reader, it was one of my favorites, and one story that as a child I would fantasize myself being in. (I loved reading the comment about the child "talking to the characters" while coloring the pictures... though, since I only had library copies, I never dared try coloring them!) I especially liked the idea that the "professor" could be the hero of the story, even up against the older S&A crews.

But unlike any of the others, it does not have a "last chapter" that settles everyone down after the adventure is over... except for the drawing at the end. It feels very unsettling to come to the end, as a result, which may hurt its popularity.

I often wonder if Ransome knew it might be his last book and was reluctant to finish it.
