Concerning the use of "BEEF" meaning to put some effort into a
physical task, I did a SEARCH and found:

"Three times," said Peter Duck. "Put some beef into it. We're
getting into the track of the Channel shipping."

----------
They were using the wooden spades, and just as Captain Flint
came back to the diggings Peggy had the bad luck to break a spade
through putting too much beef into digging with it.

"Beef!" cried Roger.

"I'm not sleepy either," said Roger stoutly. "Let's go on till the day after tomorrow to make sure of it." And he put a little extra beef into his working of the bellows.

----------
"Whoa, old lady," he muttered to himself, as an extra hard puff asked for an extra bit of beef on the tiller.
-----
"Quick, Roger," said John. "Go on!... Beef!"

Of course, there were many references to "BEEF", meaning meat to eat, as pressed beef, or corned beef.
