I know what Mike means. I used to have a similar reaction when Rock Bands like the Who used to smash guitars on stage. I felt really upset - each guitar had been made by meticulous craftsmen at Fender or wherever and then fine-tuned and polished. People had spent time on it, using expensive materials. It was also a musical instrument. Then it was just smashed. Couldn't they have given it to some deserving young musician? I'm not saying that doodling on books is in this league, because books are cheap to produce in large numbers but it's somehow the same principle.
