In the film "Blow Up" there is a sequence near the end with the Yardbirds playing when Jeff Beck smashes his guitar. Antonioni had apparently seen The Who and wanted to use the idea in his film. While I agree that smashing guitars seems an awful waste, in the film Beck was provided with a cheap Hofner (or Hohner ?) guitar to use instead of his normal Fender Stratocaster. Pete Townshend, I believe, would specifically switch guitar in advance of the show-stopping number which climaxed with him smashing it. All for artistic effect !
