At the risk of oversimplification, AR wrote about children for children. Adults were necessary only as occasional companions or expediters. As the original post indicated, most of us grew up in the 1940s-1960s, and we read AR et al. as children. Neither we nor many other adults discovered AR after reaching their majority.
