Indeed. Mrs Blackett's reaction to the naming of the pigeons is a lovely bit of byplay, very entertaining to adults and older children. But remember too that the story involves a crushing piece of punning logic by Nancy... There's no doubt at all that AR wanted to enjoy the books himself. As he said so often, you don't write for children, you write for yourself. If they enjoy it too, that's how it works.

All my working life I made TV programmes; like all my friends and colleagues, I made the programmes for me. That was the only way to do it; respect your audience as you do yourself. I was just a journeyman producer, not a considerable author like AR, but the principles are exactly the same.
