Lucas isn't very well known in the US except perhaps to those who have owned British automobiles in the past. Lucas was (is?) a manufacturer of electric components, certainly for autos, and quite probably much more widespread. They seem to have, or have had, a reputation for equipment failure at unconvenient times, esp. headlights -- hence the title "Prince of Darkness". Personally I've always liked the company motto as it was told to me: "A good day's work, and home before dark."
