The classic example of (attempted) pretentious sailing is at the beginning of The Riddle of the Sands.
And the Lifeboat magazine of the RNLI had a good story some years ago. Someone put out an emergency radio call. "What is your position?" said the coastguard. "I'm CEO of the xxx Company," was the reply.
