I think I know what you mean about of pretension in an effort to be pretentious about being unpretentious , although my mother (God rest her soul) used to say I was an inverted snob as I would never waer good clobber, but I would wear a Harris tweed Jacket with Jeans. Now it is all the rage, so I am lost.
Of course my new US wife dresses me well. So Mum would now be wrong some of the time.
I used to be proud to be an inverted snob in a family full of snobs.
Dinghy sailing tends to get rid of the pretentious - you get to wet to fast.
Of course this is the man who was run down by a 60 foot yacht - I had right of way and standing on the bottom of the hull of my Skate I roundly rebuked the skipper, with a few choice words. If you have seen Shaun of the Dead you will have heard some of the words, and then a lady stuck her head over the gunwale and screamed sorry. hard to continue using such language to a Lady.
