the opportunities for pretension afforded by hiking
Well, if we narrow this down to fell-walking (which I have done for many years), I cannot think of a pretentious way to get up a fell - you either reach the top or you don't. Nobody really cares how you're dressed. It's usually raining anyway. No 'opportunities' there. However, I can see that sailing involves, of necessity, both equipment and special clothes, and that is where 'opportunities for pretension' occur.

Can, therefore, Peter W or Laurence M (sorry about the 'w') suggest a form of dress for someone who is a complete beginner in a boat, and which could not possibly regarded as pretentious? This info could save my life one day.
