It would have been possible, then as now, to go from the banks of the Orwell to Walton-on-Naze without going anywhere near the "Roaring Donkey" - but maybe AR, visiting Walton, for detail for SW, as he may well have done (it is quite a long walk from the Wade to Mill Lane) went to the Royal Hotel for lunch? If so, he would have passed the "Roaring Donkey", as I recall from childhood that the coast road was not made up beyond the King's Cliff Hotel in the late 50's, so no alternative route would have been possible.
