I was thinking more that he would have stayed at the Royal Hotel in Clacton and passed the Roaring Donkey travelling to Walton by road. Otherwise there was no reason at all to be in the Holland/Clacton area if he sailed to or from Walton. On doing a quick check of his letters there is only one reference to the area (other than confirming to a reader that SW was set near Walton), and that was sailing along the coast and stopping only at Walton. The other option was that he heard 'old boys' talking about the Roaring Donkey when he was Walton, as it is a long established pub being in Holland rather than the much younger Clacton on Sea.
