Here is a website with some Lucas jokes about their automotive electrical components, though what was Joseph Lucas of Birmingham (England!), then just Lucas or Lucas Industries or Lucas plc now seems to be part-American as Lucas Varity, and the website www.lucasvarity.com seems to belong to TRW Automotive of Michigan!
But the elegant & reliable twin-coil arrangement on my BSA Sunbeam/Triumph Tigress scooter I mentioned was replicated on a Triumph Trident motorcycle I saw recently, which had three seperate ignition coils under the seat, one for each cylinder. With no distributor there is only one lead direct from the coil to the spark plug, and the spark when starting is not dependent on the speed of kicking as with a magneto on small engines.
