i.e. Horsey Island. Which I presume is pronounced 'Hawzey', not 'Horse-y'. I would much appreciate any info. on Horsey, especially its history. My 3great-grandfather, Bartholomew Barton (1743 - 1828) owned the island at some period during his life, losing heavily financially when the sea broke the banks and flooded it.
I lived at Mersea Is. for nearly 20 years, but never visited Horsey.
It appears to be still around 600 acres in the 1940 map I have, but diminished in size and altered in shape by ther 1950 floods.
It was through a search for Horsey that I discovered TarBoard a few days ago, not having known that it was 'Swallow Island'. As far as I can make out, Ransome has changed Skipper's Island to Mastodon Is, Hamford Water to Secret Water, Stone Point to Flint Is, omitted Hedge-end Is and inserted Bridget Is. Renaming Walton Channel Amazon Creek plus Magellan Straits. No doubt Horsey had wild horses before the Domesday, but the origins even in the last few centuries seem to be lost from record - not even the Additional Manuscripts of the British Museum have a jot about it!
