Periwinkles

I believe the winkles referred to are what are called in New England periwinkles.

In zoology, any marine snail of the family Littorinidae, found on the shores of Europe and eastern North America. Periwinkles have a conical spiral shell, and feed on algae.

They are quite small (from 1/4 to 1/2 inch perhaps) and eaten out of the shell with a common pin. It would take quite a large number to satisfy a good appetite.
