I have been looking into how I can sail my 16 foot trailer sailer by myself across to the Isle of Man. It's not far, about 10 hours sail, IU've steered for that length of time alone before but only on Windermere. I've found alot about sheet to tiller steering systems, where you can just simply attach the main, or when downwind like john attach the jib sheets to the helm. Okay I've tried it and it's not as simple as that, you have to fine tune it, but it's the way thousands do. Another way, the way Slocum did it was to tie down the tiller (Sligtly to windward) with a piecec of line or bungee cord. But if you are into the real science of sailing, when close hauled/close reached/beam reaching you just balance the sails out, normaly you sheet the jib in more than normal and let the main out a little more than normally you would do. If you read Emma Richards autobiography, she talks about doing just the later when her auto pilot(s) failed on a transatlantic race.
Sorry if I've just rambled on a bit but that's what I normaly do. (if you want any reference sites on the net or any reference book details on all this just e-mail my dad)
