But asking for that information about the bobstay got us all a fantastic photograph of one that shows this feature so magnificently. Whether I knew the answer or not does not necessarily preclude me from asking, as the reply was very delightful for many, other than just myself. Now I have on file a great photo of a JIBBOOM and now of a BOBSTAY as part of my Ransome collection. Thanks for those nice contributions...

From WDCH4.TXT as Jim is showing them how to lower the anchor:

Jim was lowering the anchor over the bows. "You have to
be careful the stock doesn't catch on the bobstay," he said,
and John took a good grip of the forestay and looked over
Jim's shoulder and saw how the anchor hung free at the
Goblin's forefoot, all ready to let go.

From WDCH7.TXT, as they began to realize their problem in the fog:

And then Susan saw John's eyes suddenly widen. She too
had heard the noise that had startled him, the sudden metallic
scrawk of the anchor chain against the chain of the bobstay.

From WDCH8.TXT, as they were trying to get the kedge anchor over:

"Hang on, just a minute. Where's the boathook. The
wretched stock's gone and caught on the bobstay."

From WDCH20.TXT, as the pilot led them to a mooring in Flushing:

The buoy was nearer and nearer. He could not
reach it from the deck. He slipped down by the stemhead,
under the bowsprit, got his feet on the bobstay, and hanging
on to the bowsprit with one hand, waited with the end of the
rope ready in the other.

From WDCH27.TXT, as they got underway to leave Flushing:

Roger pushed the gear lever forward. The noise of the
engine changed. There was a clank under the bobstay, and
they saw the anchor come aboard. The Goblin was moving.
