Indeed it does. And not only that -- the bobstay tension supports (or is counteracted by) that in the forestay, which is balanced by that in the swifters / backstays, and sometimes by forestays, backstays, or triatic stays of other masts as well.

If you were to lose your bobstay it's quite on the cards that your vessel would be dismasted. Sad fate....
