The file could have been the one in the all-purpose pocket knife that they used (and wore out, taking most of a day?) filing through the iron bar in WH which went above the fireplace. It would have been quicker to borrow a hacksaw from the farm, but that would be against the rule of being self-sufficient (though they did borrow spades and a crowbar from the Tysons in PP to dig down to water).
