Other common British makes of bicycle were the Rudge, Raleigh & Humber which when I got one (a Humber) c1950 were all made by TI or Tube Investments I think. And it had Sturmey-Archer hub gears plus a Dynohub lighting generator which was built into the front hub (no drag) instead of clipping onto the forks and running off a roller on the side of the tyre.

I later had a BSA motor scooter though. BSA (Birmingham Small Arms) manufactured motor cycles, the small BSA Bantam two-stroke and larger four-stroke twins. They were allied with Triumph motorcycles and I think Daimler cars? Was Sir Bernard Docker the chairman of BSA? With Lady Docker he was part of the British social scene that got in the papers. I think BSA were still manufacturing guns (eg target shooting rifles) too, or was that a seperate company?

In PP the bicycles were dromedaries. In PM Billy used Nancy’s bike because he put his foot through the wheel of his own bicycle on Saturday night. Did the postman in PM have a bike? Bicycles don’t appear in any other Lake stories, but there is the odd one in CC or BS (and WD?). A challenge for Ed as they can be called bicycle, bike or cycle.
