My eight-year-old daughter Carina has had an imaginary friend "C2" since she was about three. "C" stands for Carina, and she sees this friend as an "other self" with whom she's often in competition.

It's been very interesting watching what's happened to C2 as "C1" herself has got older. I can talk to Carina quite seriously about C2, and she'll answer me equally seriously. But at the same time there'll be a little twinkle in her eye which tells me quite plainly that she knows that we both know that C2 is an invention, but that it suits us both to continue treating her as real.
