The 'hongi' or Maori greeting involves touching the side of each nostril with the visitor's nose, taking in the breath of the tangata whenua or people of the land. Another televised incident was when the Beatles came to NZ in 1963 and Paul McCartney hongi'ed with enthusiasm.
