I'm following this discussion from my library in the middle of the United States, and I find that virtually all of my dust jackets read top-to-bottom and are best read when leaning to starboard. However, this is not necessarily so on the spine on the books. In some cases, the title and author's name are printed horizontally. This is particularly true of the older Perry Mason mysteries published by Morrow in the 1930s. Also, on some compilations, which are bigger volumes, the title and author's name are printed horizontally. Perhaps there is no standard.
