Thank you to all those who responded to my initial post.
It is possible to establish some tentative rules taking into account the responses and further research among my own books.
Note lpp=lines per page.:-

1. All books first published prior to 1939 had 33 lpp. But WD has been reported with 35 lpp - has this book had the type reset during wartime or soon after. I have not seen CC 1934 in hard back but assume that it has 33 lpp.
2. Books first published prior to 1939, did not have the type reset to a greater number of lines during the war but may have the non text pages reduced.
3. Books first published during the war and after including GN 1947 (36 lpp)had an increased number of lpp. But I have not ssen hardbacks of BS 1940 and ML 1941 but would expect them to have between 34 and 37 lpp. Note PM 1942 has 37 lpp, if it had been 33 lpp it would have been 36 pages longer - quite a saving.

It would be helpful if someone could confirm the lpp for CC, BS and ML.
Probably others will come up with examples that blow the above rules apart! Please let me know.

A few ancillary questions :-

A. How many books were printed in each impression 1,000? 10,000?
B. Were the Penguin/Puffin books photographically reduced print of the original text?
C. Did type resetting alter the lpp?
