Well, I agree with you about the mountains making the Lakes books interesting, Richard.

I live in a place whose local geography is very similar to Ransome's East Coast though, and I assure you though that the flat countryside with its 180° horizons and clear light, and with the tides seeping in over the mud-flats, gurgling and chuckling as they come, and with the wind-squalls sweeping in over the marshes in winter or the mud baking under the sun on a hot still summer's day, has a charm no less appealing despite being so different.
