Hh'mmm.... Don't know about a French plot, but the English have got it right this time (assuming there's any standard at all, which seems doubtful.)

Given that the printing has to run along the spine if there's not the width to have it running across it, then it's perfectly logical to have it oriented so that one "tilts one's head to starboard" to read it on the shelf -- were it to be the other way, the writing would be upside-down when the book was lying flat on a desk.
