Adam is correct in a way, except that in some areas of the world the Great Lakes would be known as inland seas.

I also come from an area known as the Kawartha Lakes that just seems to have water everywhere in large volumes and surface area. When I saw and sailed on Windemere and Coniston in 2000, I thought I was on the rivers that connect the Kawartha Lakes to each other.
