As a UK Tarboardist, I am a bit bemused by the constant need of our transatlantic correspondents to tell us how big the Great Lakes are. Yes - they are huge, vast - so what? And the Austrian student's query seemed quite reasonable and polite to me - why put him down? I don't get it.

Further dispiriting news for Brits - a letter in a paper today says that Scafell is shrinking. According to the Ordnance Survey, it lost 4 ft in height between 1966 and 1972. No doubt at this rate, it will fit into the pocket of an American or Canadian AR-lover next time they're over.
