There is a difference between communication, discussion and argument and taking or giving offence.
I belong to a Patrick O'Brian based discussion e-mail list which tries to maintain a degree of civility. On the other hand there is another similar O'Brian forum where the tone is quite different and is, as Peter might say, full of "real communication".
Basically the result of all this real and offensive "communication" is that the participants shout insults at each other from their fixed positions rather than really communicate and come to some useful conclusion, even if it is just agreement to disagree.
