It's really fascinating to watch the evolution of threads on this board, with even those who profess to deplore some of the tangents which others follow contributing their own. So far a query about favourite illustrations has led to posts on:
Railway routing/scheduling between London and the Norfolk Broads
Comparative transportation costs (rail/bus/rental car) for same
Origin of the village name 'horning"
Lakes, mountains, and their definitions, in various parts of the world
Obscure units of measure
Rainfall extremes
Electronic calculator/computer models and modes
Steam engines
railway histrivia
boatbuilding: progress, methods, materials, and costs
Contrarianism/disputation and its significance in this and other message boards.
I'm sure I've omitted some, but most of the above seemed to arise naturally from prior posts in the thread. Most of them also incorporated nuggets of what, depending on one's point of view, could be considered either trivia or invaluable information to be saved and savored.
