Proper lemonade in England still is lemon juice, water and sugar, home made - as Cook's evidently was - each from our own recipes. That certainly is what the Amazons produced.
The nearest shop bought equivalent is lemon squash.
Lemonade in shops here and throughout Europe is indeed fizzy, of variable quality, and has moreover largely displaced ginger beer as an everyday tipple. But the proper stuff survives.
