In this household we get through Bovril very slowly. I recently finished an elderly pot of it, definitely beef-based, and bought a new one a few months ago. It's still unopened, but says "Original" on the label. The list of ingredients starts with Beef. Joy must have bought the wrong type.
As for Vegemite, John Nichols suggests your preference for it or Marmite depends on the age you meet it. I was brought up on Marmite, and didn't hear of Vegemite for many years. When I first tasted it, in Australia aged over 60, I found I preferred it.
Luckily in became available in British supermarkets about the same time.
