Interesting... we must have run into different people in Massachusetts and in Maine. We're also reading different maps. The one on the page you linked is a bit confusing - indeed, I don't see "tonic" on it as a response. The "soda" response seems to cover more of New England than the other responses, but it's hard to tell. There's a link to another one, which I post below, that I find easier to read. It reflects my experience pretty well.

As for Connecticut, you're right, although the BoSox/Yankees line is somewhere around the Connecticut River. As people move farther away from New York, but still work there, the worse it gets.
