If you're going to be pedantic, be correct. Nancy's provision and use of the climbing rope was what saved Roger. Incompetent? I think not. She made appropriate provisions for the route planned. She arranged for re-provisioning at Base Camp. She may have chosen a more adventurous route than the natives commonly used, but did any of the Swallows, Amazons, D's, BPS, et. al. choose the "native" way when there was a more interesting one available? This was, I might note, a practice uniformly supported by their parents. Deviations from the adventurous choice were in the interests of maintaining a degree of amity with the rest of the native population.
