We really ought to have waited at the top, taking in rope hand over hand so that he couldn't slip. But you can't allow for everything.
Remember these were sailors, not rock climbers! And in any case, would not belaying have required pegs to have been driven in? (The illustration shows a flat-topped rock at the top.) This would have been a bit over-serious for the children surely?
